What is Smith Point like to live in?

Smith Point is a Chesapeake caisson light. An iron cylinder sits on the bay bottom, the keeper’s house rides on top of it, and the lantern room caps the house.

The restoration kept the parts worth keeping. Brick walls, the original stairs, trim and doors are still on view, and the newer work is beadboard, vinyl plank floors and a cherry kitchen. Three bedrooms sit upstairs. The fourth is in the watch room, one flight above.

The listing is honest about what is left to do: rails, appliances, windows and the watch room floors need repair.

What should you check before you bid?

Before you bid on Smith Point, check the power and water systems. Power comes from a portable generator, and water and waste run on a 250-gallon system with tanks in the basement. Ask how long a fill lasts with a full house.

The sale is cash only, and the tower is on the National Register, so exterior changes carry restrictions. Budget for a boat, insurance and regular paint. The tower sits in salt water, and rust never stops. Read the buyer’s checklist before you make an offer.
