Which lighthouses are for sale in Michigan?
One package is for sale in Michigan: Gravelly Shoal in Saginaw Bay and Skillagalee in northern Lake Michigan, listed together at $179,900 since June 8, 2026. A nonprofit owns both and will not split them. Cleveland West Pierhead in Ohio is under federal review and would be the second Great Lakes offering.
Both Michigan towers are working lights with no house. This is a stewardship purchase, and the listing says to call the agent before any visit.
What is the Michigan bottomlands lease?
Michigan owns the Great Lakes bottomlands under a lighthouse, and a buyer must sign a Private Use Agreement with the state before using or occupying it. GSA’s Michigan offerings state this condition. The Coast Guard also keeps an access easement so it can service the navigation light.
Ask the state for the current agreement terms before you bid. The Ohio side works differently: Cleveland West Pierhead requires a 25-year lease with the Army Corps of Engineers, and Ontonagon Breakwater in Michigan needs an Army Corps lease because it is attached to a federal breakwater.
What have Great Lakes lighthouses sold for?
Skillagalee sold at a GSA auction in September 2015 for $23,250, after a free offer in 2011 drew no applicants. Gravelly Shoal’s 2015 auction had a $16,000 first bid that did not close, and the light passed to the next bidder. Cleveland West Pierhead drew a $425,000 high bid in 2023 that never closed.
GSA’s 2019 Great Lakes offering included Poe Reef Light near Cheboygan with a $50,000 opening bid, Ontonagon Breakwater Light at $5,000 and Superior Entry Light at $10,000. See the sold lighthouses table for the prices we can confirm.
How do you get to a Great Lakes lighthouse?
You need your own boat. Gravelly Shoal stands about 2.5 miles into Saginaw Bay, and Skillagalee sits on an island about 7 miles northwest of Cross Village. Cleveland West Pierhead is half a mile out and lands from a platform with steps or a wall ladder.
Lake weather and winter ice limit when you can go. The Coast Guard keeps an access easement to service the lights, so plan around it. Read the buyer’s checklist for the access and lease checks.
